I was reading Search Engine Journal and it was featuring an article if your permalink is better in terms of SEO “at the root” folder or it doesn’t matter at all.
For me personally, I prefer a shorter url, as it enhance the neatness of the article permalink. Easier for association for the readers themselves. Being a neat freak myself, it’s no-brainer I chose the shorter url.
I would usually write an article, and then for the permalink part, I would manually shorten it to just the gist of the keywords, save it, and publish the article. Remove redundant words such as “the” “is” “and” …
Well that’s my opinion, and it has been working out well for me, but what does Google says about it.
Google Says
- Best SEO URL practice: it is recommended to have no more than 3-5 words in the file path (note: this is not really about the whole URL but the actual file path after the last / in the URL but should be mentioned anyway as it indirectly demonstrates Google’s overall treatment of the URL length)
- According to Google’s Matt Cutts, “if there are more than 5 words – [Google] algorithms typically will just weight those words less and just not give you as much credit.”
- Click-through: this research shows that short URLs within Google SERPs get clicked twice as often as long ones. Besides, longer URLs are cut off in Google SERPs – so the end user can’t see where he is going to land, this should be decreasing the click-through immensely.
